ABOUT ME

JOHN PENNER

FOUNDER

I grew up in Northern California, where some of my earliest memories are standing beside my dad on cold riverbanks, learning how to cast, untangle knots, and appreciate the patience that good fishing teaches you. Those long days on the water shaped who I am, and they taught me to slow down, pay attention to the world around me, and value the quiet connection between people and the outdoors.

When I moved across the country to attend the University of Tennessee, I wasn’t sure how East Tennessee fishing would compare to what I was used to. It didn’t take long to fall in love with it. The rivers, lakes, and mountain streams here have their own kind of magic, and exploring them has become one of my favorite parts of being a student at UT. Whether I’m fishing after class, waking up early to hit a new spot, or sharing the water with friends, East Tennessee has become just as important to my story as the places I learned to fish back home.

Those two worlds, California roots and Tennessee waters, inspired the passion behind Fly Rods. I wanted to create something that makes it easier for anyone, anywhere, to enjoy great fishing without the hassle. This business reflects the same values I learned from my dad: treat people well, take care of your gear, respect the water, and always make time to enjoy the fish, the scenery, and the experience.
